HBO Thesis Student: Research into damages within the Parts distribution center

Within the PACCAR Parts Distribution Center (PDC) in Eindhoven, damages to parts and packaging occur annually. These damages lead to extra costs, process disruptions, and can influence customer satisfaction.

The goal of this assignment is to gain insight into the nature, extent, and main causes of these damages. Based on data analysis and observations on the shop floor, you will investigate where in the logistical process damages occur and which factors contribute to them.

You will analyze, among other things, the processes surrounding:

• Receipt of goods
• Storage of parts
• Internal transport
• Order picking
• Packing and consolidation
• Shipping to customers

Based on your findings, you will develop improvement measures that contribute to reducing damages within the distribution center.

Assignment Result

At the end of the internship, you will deliver:

• An analysis of the current damage issues.
• Insight into the main causes of damage.
• Concrete improvement proposals to reduce damages.
• An elaboration including a cost-benefit analysis and, where possible, validation of at least one selected improvement.
