Requirements
What we're looking for
- You have (nearly) graduated with a Master of Laws;
- You have excellent academic results;
- You are analytically strong, curious, and possess strong communication skills;
- You are ambitious, commercially minded, and enjoy collaborating;
- You have excellent command of the Dutch and English languages.
The role
Have you (nearly) graduated in Dutch law and do you want to develop yourself within an international financial practice? Then start as a trainee lawyer within our financial practice group. You will work on complex, often cross-border financing transactions and advise leading banks, funds, companies, and other market participants.
At A&O Shearman, we combine a strong position in the Dutch market with the strength of a global network. From our office in Amsterdam, we work daily with colleagues all over the world on complex, often cross-border issues for listed and large unlisted companies, financial institutions, governments, and social organizations.
What characterizes us? An open, no-nonsense culture in which collaboration, quality, and personal development are central. We believe that you perform best when you can be yourself and are given the space to grow.
The practice group
Within our financial practice, you will work on complex and impactful transactions for prominent banks, funds, companies, and governments. You will be part of international teams and gain experience with a wide range of financing forms, including leveraged and fund finance, asset and project finance, DCM, derivatives, securitizations, and restructurings. Current themes such as ESG and the energy transition also play an important role. You will quickly receive responsibility and work closely with experienced lawyers and colleagues in various international markets. In this way, from the very beginning, you build your substantive expertise and professional development.
What will you do?
From your first day, you will be part of the team. Together with colleagues, you will work on challenging national and international files and will quickly receive your own responsibility. Under the guidance of experienced lawyers and partners, you will advise clients active in various sectors and be involved in negotiations and transactions.
Your development
We invest heavily in your development. Through our internal training program, you will work on both your legal knowledge and your professional skills. Additionally, you will follow the training at the Law Firm School.
During your trainee lawyer period, you will work according to a rotation model and gain experience within different practice groups. You will start your first seat within our financial practice group; your second seat is still open. This gives you the opportunity to discover another area of law alongside Finance and build a broad foundation for your further career as a lawyer.
Who are you?
Apply
Our open and inclusive office culture stimulates ambitious talent, whoever you are. Belong. Excel.
We believe in the power of diverse teams and different perspectives. This enables us to better advise our clients, achieve successes together, and continue to grow as an organization.
Become enthusiastic? Then upload your CV, cover letter (including your top three preferred practice groups), unedited transcripts (Master, Bachelor, and high school) and any internship evaluations
Selection procedure
Within three weeks of your application, you will go through the full selection process. We start with an assessment of your application documents. If these are a good match, an assessment follows, through which we gain more insight into your qualities and way of working. The assessment includes, among other things, an aptitude test.
Subsequently, you will have a conversation with HR, in which we will discuss, among other things, your assessment results and motivation. Finally, you will have two interviews with a total of four partners. In these, we will delve further into your experiences, ambitions, and fit with our practice.
With a view to stimulating equal opportunities and limiting unconscious bias, we use Scenario Based Interviewing during our interviews.
