The role

As a volunteer at Stichting Patiëntenzorg, you are so much more than a helping hand. You ensure that patients and their loved ones feel welcome and seen when they enter the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. A cup of coffee, a magazine, a flower, or just a pleasant chat: it is precisely those small moments that can make a big difference on a day that is exciting and impactful for many people. Do you want to make a difference for patients and their loved ones with your attention and involvement? Then we would love to meet you!

What you'll do

Stichting Patiëntenzorg is committed to making visits to and stays at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek as pleasant and comfortable as possible. With an enthusiastic team of volunteers, we provide extra attention, a little distraction, and a warm welcome for our patients and their companions every day. As a volunteer, you are visibly present in the AVL. You welcome patients and companions with something to drink in the central hall and in the day treatment unit. You ensure that reading tables and magazines are kept tidy, care for flowers in the central hall, and ensure a rotating collection of framed reproductions on the nursing wards. You will also visit patients with a mobile shop or a book trolley. And in all these activities, one thing is central: personal contact. Having a chat, listening for a moment, or simply offering a moment of conviviality. Additionally, we help with special moments in the AVL, such as activities around Christmas and actions organized by others within and outside the AVL. In this way, together with other volunteers, you contribute to an environment in which patients and their loved ones feel as comfortable as possible.

About Stichting Patiëntenzorg

Stichting Patiëntenzorg is an independent, ANBI-registered organization that works selflessly for the well-being of patients and their loved ones in the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. The foundation is entirely dependent on the financial support of companies and individuals. Thanks to this support, our volunteers can offer just that little bit extra that makes a stay in the AVL more pleasant.

Requirements

Volunteering at Stichting Patiëntenzorg is people work. We are therefore looking for someone who is genuinely interested in others and gets energy from personal contact. Someone who easily makes conversation, but also senses when someone needs a listening ear or perhaps some peace. Furthermore, we ask of you:

  • You are a committed and communicative volunteer.

  • With your warmth and sincere interest, you make contact with patients and their companions in a natural and friendly way.

  • You are discreet and can handle confidential and personal situations well.

  • You are in good physical and mental condition and do not find it a problem to walk the necessary steps with a trolley.

  • You are available for one half-day every two or three weeks and are potentially willing to fill schedule gaps in the event of, for example, illness or vacation.

  • You speak and understand the Dutch language very well and can easily carry out a good conversation.

What do we offer you?

We like to invest in our volunteers. You will receive careful induction and will be given the space to get to know the work and the environment well. Additionally, we find it important that volunteers meet each other and feel connected to the organization. Therefore, we organize a meeting with lunch twice a year, in which we come together, exchange experiences, and get to know each other better.

Around Christmas, we organize a pleasant gathering for patients, their loved ones, and volunteers. We also organize (together with the 3 volunteer groups in and around the AVL) an interesting themed afternoon in the AVL every year regarding the latest developments within oncology. New volunteers also receive communication training, so that you can start your work well prepared. And of course, our volunteers receive a beautiful Christmas gift every year as a token of appreciation for their efforts.

We also like to think along with you practically; it is possible to obtain a parking permit for the AVL's secure parking garage.
