The role

Are you a plastic surgeon and do you want to further develop yourself into a hand surgeon? Within the Amsterdam Hand Fellowship, you will receive the unique opportunity over 12 months to gain experience in both an academic and a high-volume clinical environment. You will work at both Bergman Clinics and Amsterdam UMC and develop into a broadly trained hand surgeon with expertise in hand, wrist, and peripheral nerve surgery.

How you can make an impact as a Fellow

During this fellowship, you will make a direct contribution to the treatment of patients with a wide range of conditions of the hand, wrist, and peripheral nerves. Through the combination of specialized elective care and complex academic care, you will develop broad knowledge and skills within the field of hand surgery. You will work closely with experienced hand surgeons and multidisciplinary teams and play an active role in patient care, education, and knowledge development.

What will you do?

Over the course of 12 months, you will further develop into an independently practicing hand surgeon within a unique combination of academic and specialized top-tier care.

  • At Bergman Clinics, you will participate under supervision in full patient care: from diagnostics and indication to conservative treatment, surgeries, and postoperative follow-up. You will gain extensive experience within elective hand and wrist surgery, including the treatment of Dupuytren's, CMC-1 osteoarthritis, ligamentous wrist issues, SL injury, and TFCC pathology.

  • Within Amsterdam UMC, you will participate in sub-specialty internships and multidisciplinary care regarding complex wrist pathology, peripheral nerve surgery, spasticity surgery, pediatric hand surgery, congenital abnormalities, rheumatic hand surgery, and complex traumatic reconstructions of the hand and upper extremity.

  • You will be actively involved in multidisciplinary consultations, quality and complication discussions, contribute to education for physician assistants, nurses, and students, and participate in relevant training and continuing education activities.

What makes this fellowship special is the combination of high-volume elective hand and wrist surgery at Bergman Clinics and complex academic reconstructive hand, wrist, and nerve surgery within Amsterdam UMC. This allows you to develop into a broadly trained hand surgeon with experience across the full breadth of the field.

What do you need to be successful in this role?

  • You are a BIG-registered plastic surgeon or will be at the start of the fellowship.

  • You have a demonstrable affinity with hand and wrist surgery and/or peripheral nerve surgery.

  • You have the ambition to further develop into a broadly trained hand surgeon.

  • You possess good communication skills and enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams.

  • You work in a patient-centered, quality-conscious manner and have an interest in education and scientific development.

Are you doubting whether the position of Hand Surgery Fellow is right for you? Please feel free to contact us, we are happy to think along with you!

What do you get in return?

We believe that good care begins with our employees. That is why we take good care of you.

Employment conditions

  • A 12-month fellowship for 0.8 fte.

  • Intensive guidance by experienced hand surgeons from both Bergman Clinics and Amsterdam UMC.

  • A structured rotation program through various sub-specialties within hand surgery.

  • Opportunities for education, scientific deepening, and participation in relevant training and continuing education.

  • A strong foundation for obtaining the FESSH/EBHS diploma and a further career within hand surgery

Where you will work

The Amsterdam Hand Fellowship is a joint initiative of Bergman Clinics and Amsterdam UMC.

At Bergman Clinics, you will work within a specialized treatment team of hand surgeons and hand therapists, where high-quality elective hand and wrist care is central. Within Amsterdam UMC, you will work in an academic environment with a tertiary referral function for complex conditions of the hand and upper extremity. It is precisely this combination of academic depth, complex reconstructive surgery, and high-volume elective care that makes this fellowship unique.
