The most beautiful thing you can do with your talent? Working at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and contributing every day to the detection of hereditary predisposition to cancer! As a Laboratory Specialist Clinical Genetics, you make the difference for patients and their families, using the most advanced molecular diagnostics in one of the leading oncological centers in the world.
Due to the retirement of a colleague, a vacancy has arisen for a Laboratory Specialist Clinical Genetics (LSKG) for a permanent position within Molecular Germline Diagnostics (MKD). As an LSKG, you are a clinical co-provider, a substantive expert, and a point of contact within a multidisciplinary team of molecular geneticists, analysts, a team leader, quality officers, bioinformaticians, and secretariat.
You assess and interpret DNA changes in genes that determine predisposition to cancer, particularly genes that play a role in hereditary forms of breast and ovarian cancer or colorectal cancer. In doing so, you actively use a recently in-house developed functional ODMS assay within Lynch syndrome diagnostics, which helps you classify variants of uncertain significance. You also provide a substantive contribution to the further development and implementation of these and future tests. Based on your diagnostics, clinical geneticists advise patients about their risk of developing cancer and preventive options.
As an LSKG, you are closely involved in mutation research in the context of molecular tumor diagnostics. Due to developments in, among others, Whole Genome (Tumor) Sequencing and the integration of tumor and germline diagnostics, you are a linchpin in advising on referrals for heredity testing based on the findings of DNA research in tumor tissue.
Assessing and interpreting laboratory results and reporting genetic research.
Ensuring quality and contributing to the daily diagnostic workflow.
Further implementing and developing NGS/WGS analyses and functional tests, including our recently implemented ODMS assay.
Contributing to the integration of tumor genetics and germline diagnostics.
Playing a key role in decision-making regarding referral to clinical genetics for tumors where mutations may indicate a hereditary predisposition.
Contributing to ongoing research. If desired, it is also possible to set up your own research initiatives.
For this position, we are looking for a driven and enthusiastic LSKG who wants to combine substantive expertise with innovation and development. We are looking for someone who:
Has completed the LSKG training from the VKGL or will complete it soon. An equivalent training as a Clinical Laboratory Geneticist (ErCLG) also fits well;
Holds a PhD in a relevant molecular biological or genetic subject;
Brings extensive experience in setting up, validating, and interpreting NGS diagnostics and is familiar with working according to quality standards;
Gets enthusiastic about tumor genetics and has an affinity for bioinformatics and automation;
Has a clear vision on the future of molecular diagnostics and likes to contribute to innovation and excellent patient care;
Switches easily between different tasks and knows how to prioritize well;
Likes to collaborate and contribute to an open and enthusiastic working atmosphere.
We are curious about your talent! Will you make the difference in the world of cancer? Apply quickly via the application button and add your CV and motivation letter to the form.
For more information about the position, you can contact José van den Berg (Pathologist) via 06-13299525. For questions about the application procedure, you can contact Daphne Heemskerk (Recruiter) via d.heemskerk@nki.nl .
We assess applications on an ongoing basis and invite suitable candidates for an interview during the application period.
A reference check is part of the application procedure.
The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) is an internationally renowned cancer center where patient care and scientific research go hand in hand. Through the continuous development of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques and functional tests, molecular diagnostics for the purpose of heredity counseling and molecular pathology are in full motion, and that certainly applies to us as well.
The DNA diagnostics laboratory is part of the Pathology department (ISO 15189 accredited) and consists of two closely cooperating sub-departments: Molecular Germline Diagnostics (MKD) and Molecular Tumor Diagnostics (MTD). The department employs sixteen pathologists, six clinical molecular biologists (KMBP), and two Laboratory Specialists Clinical Genetics (LSKG), supported by a strong bioinformatics team, quality officers, and a molecular diagnostics secretariat. Together, these disciplines shape the execution and innovation of molecular diagnostics as an integral part of the pathology department.
At the AVL, there is a dedicated Clinical Genetics department with six clinical geneticists, with whom the Molecular Germline Diagnostics (MKD) department works intensively in the context of heredity counseling.
