What we're looking for

  • Demonstrable experience in retail or e-commerce: you know the processes, data, and platforms from the inside out.

  • You have designed, deployed, and maintained AI solutions using LLMs and agents, including evals, guardrails, monitoring, and security.

  • Strong in Python and SQL, and hands-on with at least one cloud (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and a data platform such as Databricks, Snowflake, or Fabric.

  • You work daily with coding agents and critically assess what they deliver.

  • Experience in a client-facing role, such as consultancy, pre-sales, solutions engineering, or your own startup.

  • You speak and write fluently in Dutch and English.

Nice to have

Nice to have: experience with PIM, OMS, ERP, or commerce platforms, and with classic ML such as demand forecasting.

The role

You help retailers make AI a true part of their daily operations.

Thousands of products, multiple channels, fluctuating demand, and customers who expect quick answers. In retail and e-commerce, there are many opportunities for AI, but only if the solution aligns with processes, systems, and people.

As a Senior Forward Deployed AI Engineer, you are involved from the very first conversation. You turn "we want to do something with AI" into a use case you can test within weeks, or you honestly state that it is (not yet) possible. After that, you design and build the solution and bring it live in cycles of days. And then, you make yourself redundant.

What you'll do

You bridge the gap between business and technology: you sit at the table with the client, design the solution, and often implement it yourself.

  • Sharpening use cases: together with business development, you conduct discovery interviews, test use cases against real data and systems, and build a proof-of-value in days.

  • Designing and executing: you design the agentic architecture, choose the pattern that fits each situation, and bring the solution into production in short cycles, together with our AI Engineers.

  • Handing over and measuring: the client can run the solution themselves, and after go-live, you measure whether it is actually being used. That is your benchmark.

  • Making us smarter: what you learn, you make reusable for the next client, and you help new FDEs get started.

Approximately 10% of your time goes to pre-sales and 90% to delivery; business development holds commercial ownership.

AI at the intersection of commerce, data, and operations

You understand how product data, assortment, order flows, fulfillment, customer service, and commercial steering come together. Think of:

  • Agents that enrich and check product content for thousands of items.

  • A customer service application that not only answers returns and delivery inquiries but also prepares the follow-up steps.

  • Demand forecasts that category managers dare to base their decisions on.

What this is NOT

  • Not individual secondment. You work on projects on behalf of adesso, with a team behind you.

  • Not a PoC graveyard. We build to use.

  • Not slides without code. Your advice comes with a working version.

  • Not an agent just because it's possible. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best, and you say so.

You will become part of our AI Engineering team: AI engineering consultants in two roles. The Forward Deployed AI Engineer (FDE) owns the client problem and designs the solution, including the agentic architecture. The AI Engineer goes deep into build, data, MLOps, and scale, and contributes to the right approach starting from the client's question.

You are given space to shape your own work, but you are never solely responsible for all specialisms.
