The role

What you'll do

Data only becomes valuable when it is reliable, timely, and usable in the right place. As a Data Engineer at Macaw, you build exactly that: the foundation for our clients' reports, models, and AI applications. You unlock source systems, build robust loading processes, and model data so that others can immediately build upon it. We work with Microsoft technology, so you will be working with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, and Azure Data Factory. You will become part of the Data Solutions & Insights (DSI) team, working alongside data engineers, Fabric and Power BI consultants, and data architects who keep each other sharp.

Tu perfil

Your daily activities depend on two things: your client projects and your interest in internal initiatives. Client projects vary enormously, from smaller organizations where you independently build the entire data platform, to large enterprises where you are part of a project team and collaborate with project managers, solution architects, and other engineers. Our clients are primarily located in the Netherlands and Germany.

Our internal projects revolve around your interests: are you passionate about Microsoft Fabric, AI and Copilot, Azure Databricks, or do you want to delve into data governance and data quality? There are many internal initiatives you can participate in, providing you the opportunity to further develop your knowledge in other areas as well. Think of our Smart Data Platform—a data platform accelerator that we develop and maintain internally, featuring reference architectures, standard solutions, and reusable loading patterns—or Project ARA, our accelerator in Microsoft Fabric to quickly kickstart client projects.

What will you do?

  • Unlocking source systems (Azure SQL, Dataverse, SAP, APIs, files) and building reliable, restartable loading processes.
  • Building data pipelines and notebooks in Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory and/or Azure Databricks.
  • Setting up Lakehouses and Warehouses in Fabric according to a medallion architecture (bronze, silver, gold).
  • Modeling data into clear, high-performing star schemas that our Power BI consultants can immediately build upon. For implementation, you will use SQL, Python, PySpark, or Spark SQL.
  • Managing the client environment in Azure DevOps or Git: deployment scripts, CI/CD pipelines, and release agreements are part of your work.
  • Monitoring, optimizing, and troubleshooting existing pipelines—regarding throughput, reliability, and costs (Fabric capacity, Databricks clusters).
  • Capturing your solution: documentation, naming conventions, and a handover that truly allows the client and your colleagues to move forward.
  • Guiding junior colleagues through code reviews and pair programming.

What is your profile?

  • You speak fluent Dutch and can communicate professionally in English. A good command of the German language is a major plus.
  • You have 3 to 6 years of work experience as a data engineer or in a similar role within the data domain.
  • You are strong in SQL and work comfortably with Python or PySpark for data transformations.
  • You have hands-on experience with at least one of: Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, or Azure Synapse Analytics—and you want to broaden your skills to the others.
  • You know the principles of data modeling (dimensional / Kimball, star schema, 3NF) and know when to deviate from them.
  • You have experience with large datasets and know how to set up processing efficiently and cost-consciously.
  • You work with Git and Azure DevOps and are familiar with CI/CD for data platforms.
  • You are familiar with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Ideally, you have the DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate) certification, or you are willing to obtain it in your first year. DP-600, DP-203, or a Databricks Data Engineer certification is a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Purview, data quality frameworks, or Real-Time Intelligence (Eventhouse, KQL, Event Streams) is a plus.
  • You stay up to date with the latest Microsoft developments such as Copilot in Fabric and agentic AI, and you are enthusiastic about experimenting with them.

What can you expect from Macaw?

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down - We have a great team with many experienced colleagues who will help you if something is a bit outside your comfort zone.

  • A good salary and a mobility allowance for a lease car and/or NS Business Card.
  • 29 vacation days (up to 33 when we meet our targets).
  • Access to a generous training budget and plenty of room for personal development.
  • Flexible working hours (32-40). Most of us are in the office 1-3 days, and the other days at home or at the client's location.
  • A beautiful, well-connected office with nice extras such as a pool table, table tennis, and an Xbox (yes, we are Microsoft fans).
