The role

bachelor thesis internship, from February 2027

Are you that enthusiastic and analytically strong student of criminology or sociology?
Do you want to contribute to research on organized crime through your thesis research?
Do you get energy from analyzing in R and conducting socially relevant research?

This is your challenge

Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK), and the ICT Executive Organisation (ICTU) work together on various analyses to map local undermining and digital crime. The Zicht op Ondermijning dashboard shows figures and insights regarding, among other things, drug and financial offenses, real estate fraud, and suspicious transactions. We also work on analyses in the Zicht op Online Criminaliteit dashboard that provide insight into both victims and perpetrators of online crime.

We would love to offer young talent the opportunity to complete an internship at CBS.

You can conduct your thesis research on the consequences of clearing a drug lab or hemp plantation for those involved. You can also make your own suggestion for a thesis research project in the field of undermining or online crime. This can be a fully developed research question with a corresponding method, or a topic of interest to you. It is important that it contains a quantitative component, at the very least.

In addition to conducting research, by working within our team, you will gain valuable work experience in:

  • writing and checking software in R;

  • performing quality checks on data;

  • presenting your results in a team meeting.

This is your internship position at CBS The Hague

The Policy Statistics department consists of 70 colleagues divided between The Hague and Heerlen. Researchers and project leaders with many different educational backgrounds work at our department. We compile figures used for the development, monitoring, and improvement of policy, often with a cross-thematic character. We are a collaborative partner in the field of data-driven working within governments.

Below are some examples of the department's output:

This is what you bring

You are almost finished with your university studies in criminology, sociology, or a related thesis field and are looking for a thesis internship to successfully complete your studies.

Additionally:

  • do you have (some) experience with programming in R;

  • can you conduct research and analyze outcomes independently;

  • do you know how to conduct research using various methods and techniques.

Keywords that describe you are enthusiastic, proactive, and analytical.

Because all communication during the internship - both oral and written - takes place in Dutch, a good command of the Dutch language is necessary.

This is what you can expect from us

A pleasant learning environment in which you:

  • increase your professional knowledge and gain work experience;

  • apply programming skills in practice;

  • learn to work with CBS data;

  • learn to establish the link between research and policy.

In return for your commitment, you will receive an internship allowance of € 800,- gross per month (based on 40 hours per week).

Together with your internship supervisor, you will coordinate how you can work hybridly, with flexible working hours and the option to work partly from home on your internship assignment.

These are our conditions

This concerns an internship assignment and not a work experience placement. Before you begin the internship, we expect you to have an internship supervisor from your educational institution, with whom the internship has been coordinated and concrete learning objectives have been agreed upon.
This internship assignment is intended for students who are currently enrolled at an educational institution; graduates are not eligible.
