At Ballast Nedam Infra Regional Projects, there is an opportunity for a graduation research project focused on an emerging foundation technique:
BSM (Bitumen Stabilized Material), also known as foamed bitumen stabilization.
The foundation of a road is of crucial importance for both its durability and usability. Without a well-designed and executed foundation, asphalt roads, concrete pavements, natural stone paving, and clinker roads would not function properly. The foundation not only supports the road surface but also aims to transfer the traffic load to the subgrade. In this supporting function, stiffness, strength, fatigue, and resistance play an essential role against permanent deformation (such as rutting).
The new technique consists of a mixture of partially or fully in-situ mineral aggregate (for example, milled asphalt and foundation material from the road), foamed bitumen, and cement. This offers flexibility, stability, and resistance to cracking, making it a valuable option for road pavements. Ballast Nedam wants, possibly in collaboration with the Deltaplan Duurzame Wegverhardingen, to further investigate this approach to gain an even better understanding of the functional aspects.
