The role
The products we develop and produce at Abbott Zwolle find their way all over the world. Medical nutrition and infant formula products are consumed by the most vulnerable target group. It is therefore also a matter of course that quality and safety come first. The products must provide the correct nutritional value. The trend is that nutrient density and its complexity are increasing more and more. This not only complicates the processing and the efficiency of our production lines but also has an effect on the shelf life during which the products must remain stable. This is the challenge we face every day, but where there is also still plenty to discover. During this research, you will work on issues regarding the stability of our liquid formulations during production and storage.
What you'll do
The interaction between product properties and process parameters, but also the effects that nutritional components have on each other (matrix effects), are decisive for product & process stability. In this project, various (data) analysis techniques will be combined to determine the physical properties of the product as well as the product and process stability, and to further understand and visualize the associated interactions. In this assignment, small-scale production methods and scaling up to industrial scale come together. These insights will help Abbott improve current and future products and processes.
What you will at least learn during this internship is how we make our products (lab and pilot scale) and analyze them (physical and chemical techniques). Additionally, you will learn about our processes in the factory. By designing, setting up, and conducting targeted experiments with diverse ingredient compositions and specific process conditions, you will learn how the products behave during processing and during storage. The findings lead to new ideas on how to further improve product and process stability.
In the research, we follow the DMAIC structure as much as possible. The research results and recommendations will be described in a report and presented to stakeholders.

At Abbott, during your internship, you will be guided by the technical supervisor of the department where you will be interning. Additionally, you will receive a process supervisor, who will help you manage your internship project via a management tool. We use the DMAIC structure for this, but if your education requires a different structure, we can also implement that. By having 2 supervisors for content and structure, you learn how to deal with various stakeholders and how project management works, and together we monitor the progress of your project. Every week you will participate in a student meeting, where all interns come together to help each other, learn from each other, and for the social aspect! In short, you are not alone during your internship at Abbott!
