Internship assignment: Developing a Piping Specification for a Food Manufacturing Plant

Within Abbott, products, utilities, and chemicals are transported daily through an extensive network of pipes. To realize safe, reliable, and hygienic installations, it is essential that the correct design criteria are applied.

During this internship, you will get the chance to develop a company standard, in which the piping materials, valve types, and gasket materials to be applied are established per medium. You will work together with technical specialists and simultaneously gain a unique insight into larger technical investment and improvement projects within Abbott.

During this internship, you will investigate the technical requirements and operating conditions of the various media used in our plant. Based on this, you will develop a practical piping specification that can be used for new projects, modifications, and maintenance work.

The goal of this internship is the development of a complete and substantiated piping specification for the plant.

In doing so, you will establish per medium:

• Suitable piping material
• Suitable valve type
• Suitable gasket material
• Allowable pressure and temperature ranges and other properties
• Substantiation of the choices made

The final result is a piping specification matrix with which Engineering, Maintenance, and Projects can directly select the correct materials for future installations and adjustments.

At the end of your internship, you will deliver:

• A final report with research results and recommendations
• A piping specification matrix in Excel
• A presentation for the involved stakeholders

• You will work on a standard that will actually be applied within the plant.
• You will gain insight into complex production and utility systems within an international food organization.
• You will work together with various technical specialists.
• You will develop knowledge of materials science, process technology, and hygienic design.
• You will get the chance to look into larger technical projects and investments within Abbott.
• You will build experience in project-based working and stakeholder management.
• You will deliver a tangible final result that will be used within the organization for a long time.

You have an analytical mindset, have an interest in technical installations, and enjoy converting theory into a practically applicable standard. We find it important that you have good social skills and gather information by approaching colleagues, rather than only doing desk research.

At Abbott, during your internship, you will be guided by the content supervisor of the department where you will be interning. Additionally, you will receive a process supervisor, who will help you manage your internship project via a management tool. We use the DMAIC structure for this, but if your education requires a different structure, we can also utilize that.

By having two supervisors for content and structure, you learn to deal with various stakeholders and how project management works, and together we monitor the progress of your project.

Every week you will participate in a student meeting, where all interns come together to help each other, learn from one another, and exchange experiences.
