The role
Real-time estimation of soil conditions around high-voltage cables
The energy transition requires smart ways to better utilize the electricity grid. At TenneT, we are therefore researching how we can dynamically load underground high-voltage cables based on current conditions. A key factor here is the thermal properties of the soil around the cable. These determine how much heat a cable can dissipate and, consequently, how much transport capacity is available.
Within the Dynamic Cable Rating (DCR) program, we are looking for a graduate student to research how Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) measurements can be used to estimate soil conditions in real-time. The goal is to develop a reliable method to more accurately determine the maximum load of underground cables.
What you'll do
You will work together with data scientists, data engineers, asset specialists, and experts in the field of Dynamic Cable Rating. During this thesis project, you will research how state estimation techniques can be applied within Dynamic Cable Rating. In doing so, you will work with data from an existing high-voltage connection and will have the opportunity to apply theory directly to a practical case.
During this assignment, you will work on, among other things:
- Conducting literature research on state estimation within Real-Time Thermal Rating and Dynamic Cable Rating.
- Delving into thermal models of underground high-voltage cables.
- Developing and testing a method to estimate soil conditions based on DTS measurements, for example using Kalman filtering or other state estimation techniques.
- Validating the method on historical measurement data for an existing cable connection.
- Presenting results and recommendations to stakeholders within the DCR program.
- Optional: implementing the developed method within the existing software environment.
The end result is a substantiated and validated approach for estimating soil conditions around high-voltage cables. If the results are successful, the solution can be scaled up to other connections within the Dutch high-voltage grid.
What do we offer you?
- An internship allowance of 500 euros gross per month based on 40 hours per week
- A travel and work-from-home allowance
- Hybrid working: we enjoy working together at the office, but working from home is also possible
- You will receive a laptop from TenneT during your internship period

In their own words
About the company & team
You will join Digital & Technology Transformation - Operate - Data & Analytics. This team develops advanced data-driven solutions for the operation of the high-voltage grid. Examples include Dynamic Asset Rating for cables, lines, and transformers, and predicting power flows on the electricity grid.
With these solutions, we support grid operations in utilizing the existing grid more efficiently and reducing grid congestion.
