For the design of infiltration facilities, knowledge of soil permeability (k-value) is essential. In the Netherlands, numerous infiltration tests have since been carried out and recorded in an extensive database, including data on soil composition, grain size distribution, organic matter content, and type of deposit. You will dive into this data and discover which patterns can be extracted from it.
• Determine which relationships exist between the grain size distribution of the sand and the measured k-value;
• Investigate what influence the type of geological deposit has on permeability;
• Analyze what the relationship is between organic matter content and the measured k-value;
• Assess whether empirical relationships or predictive parameters can be derived based on the available data for different soil types in the Netherlands;
• Test to what extent existing literature relationships can explain the measured results;
• Conduct literature research into known correlations between soil parameters and soil permeability.
You will join Team Groundwater, where colleagues focus on groundwater issues and the translation of data into practically applicable knowledge. You will work independently on the analysis, with guidance from experienced colleagues who are ready to think along with you regarding approach and interpretation.
• An analysis of the database containing infiltration tests;
• An overview of statistical and/or empirical relationships between soil characteristics and k-values;
• An assessment of the applicability of existing literature relationships;
• Recommendations for estimating soil permeability based on available soil information, possibly without additional infiltration tests.
We are looking for a student who:
• Has an affinity with data analysis and statistics;
• Has an interest in geohydrology;
• Has experience with Excel, Python, R, or similar analysis tools (plus);
• Can work independently and can report results clearly.
Social: Together you achieve more. You are involved, know how to connect people, and are open to other perspectives. You find it important to work in an environment where collaboration, fun, and respect are central;
Pragmatic: You love to get stuck in and look for solutions that actually work. No endless theoretical stories, but concrete results that benefit the client and the environment;
Entrepreneurial: You have courage and see opportunities where others might see obstacles. You think ahead, dare to propose new ideas, and take initiative to shape the future.
Guidance by experienced specialists from Team Groundwater;
Access to an extensive, national dataset of infiltration tests;
Space to develop an analytical approach yourself;
Insight into how data analysis contributes to practically useful parameters;
Internship allowance in accordance with the guidelines of Aveco de Bondt.
