By combining data-driven insights with design, engineering, and consultancy, we jointly shape a future-proof natural and built environment.

What you'll do

As a graduate, you will be given the space to investigate this current issue and formulate concrete recommendations. You will map out:

  1. How Arcadis can strategically deploy tooling, and SBE in particular, to strengthen its added value in contract preparation and execution.
  2. Whether Arcadis would benefit from its own library for more efficient project execution, or should instead seek connection with the SBE environment of RWS or a contractor.
  3. What added value SBE can offer to other clients, as long as RWS remains the primary user.
  4. Which knowledge and skills Arcadis must develop and retain within the department to apply SBE effectively and in a future-oriented manner.

This assignment brings two worlds together: that of technical experts who fathom the possibilities of SBE, and that of stakeholders who must be convinced of the added value. You bridge the gap between technology and practice. With sharp analysis, clear communication, and an eye for opportunities, you make complex possibilities understandable and applicable.

Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to connect your research to a concrete international case: converting requirements for a tunnel project in Canada. An SBE model could have potentially helped the client to understand the concept of operations developed by Arcadis faster and better. Thus, this case offers plenty of room to test your insights directly against practice.

Within Business Unit MEP, you will work on the complete design process of infrastructural installations, from sketch design to commissioning. The department designs electrotechnical and mechanical installations for, among others, tunnels, bridges, locks, stations, and terminals. You will join an inspiring technical environment where your research can make a visible difference.

Role responsibilities

Do you want to contribute to the future of digital design within complex infrastructure projects? Business Unit MEP is looking for an ambitious graduate to research how Synthesis-Based Engineering (SBE) can be optimally deployed. Tooling is playing an increasingly large role in the contract preparation and execution of infrastructure projects. Relatics supports the recording of functions, systems, requirements, and mutual relationships; Systems Enterprise Architect goes further and makes it possible to integrally model processes, systems, and behavior as well.

Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) is now applying SBE in the contract preparation and execution of projects involving movable bridges and locks. This creates an interesting playing field in which technology, engineering, and contract formation converge.

With an SBE model, the behavior of a movable bridge can, in theory, be fully recorded, tested, and validated, after which even PLC software can be automatically generated. At the same time, this raises important questions about responsibilities and risk distribution. The current contract philosophy of RWS is specifically focused on functional specification and placing more responsibility with the contractor, who must then demonstrate that the solution meets the requirements.

Precisely in this development lies a challenging strategic question for Arcadis. Where we traditionally translate functional requirements into a preliminary design and detailed design, SBE offers the possibility to develop designs that can lead directly to PLC software. Which role best suits Arcadis in this regard, and how do we remain demonstrably of value?
