The role

Do you want to discover how to make the bank of tomorrow better for millions of private customers and entrepreneurs in the Netherlands? And do you want to learn how customer needs, commercial opportunities, social impact, and technology converge in that process?

What you'll do

As a Retail Banking trainee, you will discover how broad banking is in the Netherlands over 18 months. You will work in four different rotations within Retail NL, thereby getting to know different sides of the bank. During one rotation, for example, you might work on a better digital customer journey. In a subsequent rotation, you might investigate the influence of generative AI on business customers or work together with an account manager on financing opportunities for an innovative scale-up. In this way, you will not only get to know the bank, but also discover where your talents lie, which work suits you, and where you want to make a difference. You will work 36 hours per week in a hybrid working environment and receive a gross monthly salary of € 3,600.

  • You will work in four rotations on real issues for private customers, entrepreneurs, and colleagues;
  • You will discover how customer interest, commercial opportunities, and social impact converge within a cooperative bank;
  • You will work with customer insights, data, stakeholder management, and digital technology;
  • You will learn to translate issues into concrete improvements for customers and the bank;

Retail Banking is broader than just direct customer advice. For example, we help private customers with important financial choices and support entrepreneurs in the growth and sustainability of their business. At the same time, we work continuously behind the scenes on better products, customer journeys, processes, and digital solutions. In doing so, we look beyond just today. As a cooperative bank, Rabobank works together with customers, members, and partners on major societal changes. Think of the energy and climate transition, the food transition, and the movement towards a more inclusive society. These transitions become concrete in Retail Banking: from making homes and businesses more sustainable to financial health and financing new sustainable solutions. Because of this, you can go in many different directions during your traineeship. You can work directly with customers, but also research, advise, and work on improvements.

Examples of assignments from previous rotations include:

  • Analyzing a digital customer journey, investigating the obstacles customers and advisors face, and designing improvements together with the relevant stakeholders;
  • Investigating the influence of generative AI on the business models of business customers and developing an approach to share this knowledge within Rabobank;
  • Collaborating on a new way of working for serving high-net-worth entrepreneurs, including preparing sessions, informing stakeholders, and monitoring the progress of pilots;
  • Investigating financing opportunities together with an account manager for start-ups and scale-ups that contribute to the energy transition;
  • Investigating what Generation Z expects from banking and translating the results into recommendations for the design, user experience, and tone of voice of the Rabo App.

No rotation is the same. That is precisely why you discover how customer interest, commerce, and social impact converge within a large cooperative bank.

How you'll work

  • Hybrid working: balance between home and office work (possible for most roles)

  • You will start on April 1, 2027, together with seven other Retail Banking trainees.
  • Hybrid working is the norm. Depending on your rotation and the agreements within your team, you will work from home, Utrecht, or a Rabobank location near you;
  • An 18-month traineeship with four rotations;
  • A start date of April 1, 2027.

Yes. Hybrid working is the norm, but agreements differ per rotation, team, and manager. Please keep in mind that during the traineeship you will also work at various locations and that training sessions usually take place on Fridays at the head office in Utrecht.

Work on yourself and the world around you

For us, a traineeship is more than performing four different assignments. It is also a period in which you discover who you are as a professional, what gives you energy, and what contribution you want to make. Therefore, your development and that of the world around you go hand in hand at Rabobank. Whether you are working on the sustainability of businesses, financial health, sustainable housing solutions, or accessible services: you see how banking can contribute to changes that go beyond one customer or one financial result.

Your development as a trainee

In 18 months, you will work on your personal development, relevant skills, and knowledge of the field. You will receive plenty of space to discover and take direction of your own development. In doing so, you will receive guidance from a Talent Manager, a buddy, and a manager during every rotation. Experienced colleagues and trainers will help you apply new knowledge directly in practice. The training sessions usually take place on Fridays at the Rabobank head office in Utrecht. You will follow training sessions with your own trainee group and with trainees from other fields. During the program, you will also participate in several two-day basecamps, including an overnight stay at a location in the Netherlands. This gives you the space to get to know your strengths better, try new things, and discover where you want to continue growing after your traineeship.

Different perspectives make us stronger

A financial education is not required. Perhaps you studied economics, psychology, data science, law, communication, or something else entirely. We find your field of study less important than your curiosity, capacity to develop, and motivation to discover Retail Banking.

Are you doubting if your background fits? Don't let that hold you back. The must-haves below are important, but the nice-to-haves are not a checklist. Experiences from your studies, internships, part-time jobs, volunteer work, or other activities relevant to you can all be valuable.

What do you bring?

  • You have a maximum of 2 years of work experience after obtaining your diploma;
  • You reside in the Netherlands;
  • You are curious about Retail Banking and want to deepen your knowledge of customers, commerce, and societal issues within the financial sector;
  • You take initiative, are open to feedback, and want to actively direct your own development.

We want to be financially healthy and commercially successful, and also create value for customers, members, and society. That means we look beyond just financial results and work together on solutions for societal issues.
