Assisting with a research project focused on the application of tungsten as a shielding material for employees working with radioactive liquids, such as iodine- and fluorine-containing products.
Within the Technical Services department, research is being conducted into the extent to which thin tungsten plates are suitable as radiation shielding. A major challenge here is bending the material into the desired shape. Previous tests have shown that tungsten springs back strongly after bending, causing sharp corners to be less sharp than desired.
Tungsten plates are available in various thicknesses, ranging from 0.02 mm to 0.4 mm. During this internship, you will investigate the properties of the material and develop guidelines for the predictable and reproducible bending of tungsten.
