Crop care specialist

  • Type:                           Permanent, full-time (38 hours per week)
  • Department:                      Research & Development Vegetables
  • Location:                       Zeewolde, Netherlands

In action

Do you like working outdoors, close to the crops, and with a sharp eye for quality? As a Crop Care Specialist, you and your colleagues ensure that our trial fields are in optimal condition. Your precise work forms the basis for reliable data and, therefore, for the development of future vegetable varieties.

The challenge

At our location in Zeewolde, you are responsible for performing and coordinating cultivation technical activities on our trial fields. You will work with thirteen different vegetable crops, including cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, peas, beans, spinach, sweet corn, and onions.

We work with small trial field plots for our breeding activities. Therefore, quality, precision, and insight into the layout of the trial fields are essential. You ensure that seeds, plants, labels, numbers, and samples end up in the right place. This way, we prevent mixing and collect reliable data.

You work daily in the field yourself while simultaneously providing direction to colleagues and temporary workers. The planning may change due to capacity, weather conditions, or new trial requests. You maintain an overview, set priorities, and ensure that the work is carried out carefully.

But what does this all involve?

  • You prepare trials based on documents and lists: you collect seeds and supplies, check batch numbers, and ensure correct preparation for sowing and planting.
  • You sow, plant, care for, and maintain the trial fields. In doing so, you monitor the crop status, numbering, and labeling, signal deviations, and think along about appropriate measures.
  • You distribute daily activities, supervise colleagues and temporary workers, and monitor the quality of execution in the field.
  • You perform trial field work, such as labeling, numbering, sampling, measuring, and harvesting. This also includes digging up selected plants and the harvest of seed crops.
  • You process and register the collected data carefully and support the processing and shipment of seeds.

Most activities take place on the trial fields in the open field. Additionally, activities may also take place in the greenhouse or at an indoor location.

Your profile

You enjoy working practically in the open field and have an affinity for crop care. You are careful, maintain an overview, and work well with others. Additionally, you bring:

  • experience with, or knowledge of, cultivation technical activities and crop care;
  • an accurate and quality-oriented way of working;
  • flexibility and the ability to set priorities independently;
  • experience in supervising or directing colleagues and/or temporary workers;
  • sufficient digital skills to work with a tablet and laptop;
  • preferably a forklift certificate, BE driver's license, spraying license, and/or experience with agricultural machinery. If you do not have these yet, we will look at the possibilities to obtain them together.

Workdays generally start around 07:30 and end between 16:00 and 16:30. During peak periods, it may occur that you occasionally work longer.
