Internship Assignment: Water Storage Measures on Private Property

Location: Amstelveen

More and more municipalities are encouraging residents to collect, store, and infiltrate rainwater on their own property. This relieves the sewer system, limits water nuisance, and contributes to groundwater replenishment. However, with infiltration crates, mineral wool solutions, infiltrating gutters, and rain barrels, the range of options is vast—and not always clear for residents. You will map out this range of options.

• Inventory which rainwater storage and infiltration systems are currently available on the market for private individuals;

• Determine which systems can be easily installed by residents themselves;

• Investigate the costs, benefits, limitations, and maintenance aspects of these systems;

• Establish which preconditions determine whether a system is suitable for a specific location;

• Analyze in which situations certain systems are actually undesirable, for example, due to poor permeability, high groundwater levels, limited space, or foundation risks;

• Conduct interviews with suppliers and/or municipalities and compare the systems with each other based on technical and practical criteria

• An overview of available rainwater storage and infiltration systems for private individuals;

• A comparison of storage capacity, costs, maintenance, lifespan, and applicability;

• An assessment framework with which the suitability of systems can be determined per situation;

• An overview of points of attention and preconditions for residents;

• Practical product sheets per system, directly usable by municipalities in their communication towards residents.

We are looking for a student who:

• Has an interest in climate adaptation and urban water management or civil engineering;

• Can independently conduct literature and market research;

• Has an affinity for comparing and assessing technical products;

• Can clearly translate results into practical advice for residents and municipalities.
