Guest House Volunteer

As a volunteer in our Guest House, you are so much more than a helping hand. Together, we provide a warm welcome to people who are in a transformative period of their lives. Patients and their loved ones often come from far away, are tired from the journey, and have minds full of worries. In the Guest House, they find a place to catch their breath, and you play an indispensable role in that.

The Guest House has 15 rooms and is equipped with all conveniences. For communal use, there are various living rooms, a large kitchen with three cooking stations, and a beautiful garden. In our guest house, only patients from the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and their loved ones stay, and we offer them good and quiet accommodation.

As a volunteer, you ensure that guests feel seen, welcome, and a little bit at home. Whether you are making a room ready for guests, exchanging a friendly word, registering new guests, or showing someone the way: your attention and involvement make the difference. The work is practical and the meaning is great.

Without volunteers, the Guest House cannot exist. Together, you contribute to a place where hospitality, caring, and connection are central. Additionally, you will join a warm and dedicated group of approximately 75 enthusiastic volunteers. Work is carried out in varying shifts of 3 to 4 hours. From Sunday to Thursday, volunteers are present from 09:30 to 22:00, and on Friday and Saturday from 09:30 to 17:00.

Our guests clean their own rooms and strip the beds. Our morning volunteers remake the beds and check the rooms so that everything looks perfect again. Additionally, they do (part of) the laundry. This concerns, among other things, shifts of four hours from Sunday to Thursday from 9:30 to 22:00, and on Friday and Saturday from 9:30 to 17:00. Naturally, we begin the shift with a cozy coffee round to catch up and distribute the work. During the week, you work with several colleagues in a fixed team. On the weekend, because it is much quieter then, you have the place to yourself. Furthermore, we ask of you:

• You are a committed and communicative volunteer.

• With your warmth and interest in people, you make contact with our guests in a natural way.

• You are in good physical and mental condition and are able to perform household work.

• You like to roll up your sleeves together with others and find satisfaction in realizing a clean, hospitable, and warm guest house.

• You are available for a fixed shift once a week or once every two weeks, or are willing to fill gaps in the schedule in case of, for example, illness or vacation.

• You speak and understand the Dutch language well and can easily hold a good conversation with guests and colleagues.
