Are you a beginning ophthalmologist and do you want to further develop yourself in cataract surgery? Then this is your chance to participate in the first Fellowship Cataract of Bergman Clinics. During this fellowship, you will improve your skills across the entire breadth of cataract surgery. You will work with a large number of patients, learn from experienced cataract specialists, and follow a structured training program in which cataract surgeries and the efficient setting of the largest ambulatory surgical centers in the Netherlands come together. With 18 clinics and nearly 90 ophthalmologists, Bergman Clinics now performs 17% of the cataract surgeries in the Netherlands. With all this experience that we can share, it is a unique fellowship.
As a Cataract Fellow, you will directly contribute to high-quality eye care. You will not only develop your operative skills but also learn the art of indication, patient communication, and complication management. Thanks to your commitment, patients gain access to high-quality cataract care, while you yourself grow at an accelerated pace towards becoming an independent cataract surgeon.
During the fellowship, you will follow an intensive six-month program, during which you will be active four days per week within Bergman Clinics. You will combine outpatient clinic duties with a structured operative learning trajectory. There is compensation for the outpatient clinic duties.
Your responsibilities include, among other things:
Performing consultation hours regarding cataract care.
Analyzing patients and assessing indications for surgery.
Advising on lens choices, biometry, and premium lens options.
Conducting patient interviews and managing expectations.
Observing and performing cataract surgeries under supervision.
Steadily expanding your operative independence.
Learning to recognize and treat common complications.
Optimizing efficiency, logistics, and collaboration within the OR process.
Participating in weekly reflection, theory, and feedback sessions.
Throughout the trajectory, you will receive intensive guidance. In the first phase, you will work under direct supervision. As your development progresses, you will receive increasing space to work independently, while your supervisor remains available for support.
We are looking for an ambitious ophthalmologist who wants to further specialize in cataract surgery. You are motivated to invest in your own development and are open to feedback.
In addition, you bring:
A completed training as an ophthalmologist.
Basic experience with operative ophthalmology.
The ambition to further develop into an independent cataract surgeon.
An eager-to-learn attitude and intrinsic motivation to continuously improve yourself.
Good communication skills towards patients and colleagues.
Do you not recognize yourself in all points, but does this fellowship appeal to you as an ophthalmologist? Then we would like to invite you to respond.
You will join Bergman Clinics, an organization that delivers high-quality, planned medical-specialist care. You will primarily work at our locations in Hilversum and Amersfoort and one half-day per week at another location. Within the fellowship, you will work together with experienced cataract surgeons and a specialized OR and outpatient team. The program is designed around learning in practice, with much attention to personal guidance, professional development, and patient safety.
What makes this fellowship special is the combination of:
A high volume of cataract cases.
Intensive one-on-one guidance by experienced professionals.
A structured learning path with clear development phases.
Continuous feedback and personal coaching.
Focus on both technical skills and patient-centered care.
Acquiring insight into maximum best practice regarding process efficiency
Acquiring insight into healthcare costs and awareness of sustainable working
