The role

“We agree on what needs to happen and when the installation goes into operation. How you divide and approach the work, you arrange together. And if a malfunction occurs later, you know exactly how that installation is constructed."

What you'll do

On Monday, you and your colleagues begin the conversion of a traffic light controller. The schedule is fixed and all activities are coordinated. While one colleague installs the traffic lights, you work on the cabling and the connections in the traffic controller unit. Everything centers around that one moment at the end of the week: the commissioning. It gives a good feeling when an intersection you have worked on for days goes into full operation for the first time.

A few weeks later, you might be at the same installation again, but this time to solve a malfunction. The intersection is flashing, and you go searching for the cause. Is it due to a defective part, a cable connection, or is the problem in the control logic itself? It is precisely that investigative work that makes the job varied. You use your technical knowledge, perform measurements, and read diagrams to understand the malfunction. The best moment remains when you know what went wrong and the installation functions without problems again thanks to your solution.

As a traffic light controller technician at SWARCO, you are involved in the full lifecycle of an installation. You work on new traffic light controllers, perform conversion work, and simultaneously ensure that existing installations continue to function reliably. Because of this, you not only see how a project is built, but you also understand which choices are important for maintenance and trouble-free use in the long term.

Your activities take place on diverse traffic installations, from a simple bicycle or pedestrian crossing to complex intersections with multiple linked control cabinets. You install traffic lights, push buttons, and other components of the outdoor installation, connect cabling, and work from electrotechnical diagrams and drawings. Additionally, you inspect installations during maintenance work, replace components when necessary, and resolve malfunctions that affect the availability of the installation.

On projects, you usually work together within a fixed team. The supervisor discusses what needs to happen and when the installation must be ready. Subsequently, you collectively determine the division of labor and coordinate the activities with other involved parties and subcontractors. During service work, you often work more independently and coordinate with the service coordinator. You combine planned maintenance with reports that come in unexpectedly. When an installation fails or remains in flashing mode, that malfunction naturally takes priority.

What makes this position special is the combination of building and maintaining. You do not only work on new installations, but also see how these behave in practice. As a result, you develop broad technical insight and learn to know traffic light controllers through and through. No two days are the same. One time you are working towards a commissioning that required weeks of preparation, the next time you solve a malfunction under time pressure so that traffic can flow safely again.

In this way, you contribute directly to the safety and accessibility of the Netherlands every single day. And you see that reflected every time you drive past an intersection that you built yourself or that continues to function thanks to your efforts.
