Design how Bosch Energy & Building Solutions can securely support systems remotely.

Many systems in tunnels, with governments, and within other critical environments are technically suitable for remote management.

The only question is:

How do we organize such a service in a secure, practical, and manageable way?

Bosch wants to help customers faster, limit unnecessary trips, and better predict malfunctions. At the same time, access to systems, privacy, information security, and responsibilities must be well regulated.

Your research helps Bosch in making these choices.

Your role: connecting requirements with a secure solution.

As an HBO thesis intern, you research what the organization needs to perform remote management and monitoring responsibly.

You bring together different perspectives:

• users and customers
• service and maintenance
• installation and projects
• ICT and information security

You translate their needs into a clear list of requirements and develop a practical design proposal.

You don't just think about what is technically possible. You research what Bosch can actually apply securely and practically.

1. Inventory of the current situation

• Interviewing involved departments
• Describing current processes
• Investigating which remote solutions are already being used
• Identifying bottlenecks and opportunities

2. Determining the requirements

• Establishing functional user requirements
• Investigating technical requirements
• Describing requirements for security and data protection
• Inventorying Bosch guidelines
• Prioritizing the requirements

3. Designing a solution

You develop a design for, for example:

• roles and access rights
• secure connections
• encryption
• use of VPN
• monitoring and reporting
• registration of activities
• management processes

4. Testing and advising

• Comparing the proposal with current solutions
• Discussing the design with specialists
• Assessing feasibility and risks
• Drafting an implementation advice
• Optional deepening
• Research whether an audit trail, which records actions of users and systems, is usable and necessary within the solution.

Bosch Energy & Building Solutions works as a system integrator on security solutions for, among others, government, infrastructure, transport, and healthcare.

You will work together with:

• sales and presales
• engineers
• service and maintenance teams
• project leaders
• ICT specialists
• information security
• customer representatives

In addition to this business-oriented assignment, a technical student can work on a parallel assignment. Where possible, both assignments complement each other.

You are following an HBO program in, for example:

• ICT
• Computer Science
• Engineering Management
• Business IT
• Information Security
• You approach people easily
• You are good at listening and asking follow-up questions
• You are curious about processes and technology
• You can organize information and set priorities
• You work independently and in a planned manner
• You write clearly and substantiate your choices

Technical knowledge is important, but the emphasis lies on requirements, analysis, process design, and collaboration.

This assignment has the characteristics of an HBO thesis project because the student:

• researches a business question
• independently collects and analyzes requirements
• delivers a substantiated design and advice
• evaluates different solution directions
• applies research methods
• draws conclusions based on collected information

However, the exact formulation must be coordinated with the educational program. A problem regarding exclusively describing wishes may primarily lead to an internship product. An HBO thesis project is stronger when the student also scientifically or methodically substantiates choices, design criteria, and recommendations.
