The role

Are you an experienced ecologist with a broad vision and the drive to truly put ecology on the map? Then this is your chance to play a key role in building ecological expertise within Unihorn!

As a Senior Ecologist, you will work on future-proof solutions for infrastructure projects, for example by conducting ecological research along highways. You will be given the space to develop ecology as a full-fledged discipline within the team and embed it into our integrated services. Where we previously hired ecological knowledge externally, we are now building our own strong ecological pillar. And you will be the driver.

Because the ecological discipline is still being built, you will get the chance to provide direction to the content, focus, and approach. Your role is therefore partly to shape it yourself, with impact!

What you'll do

Your tasks include:

  • Performing and coordinating ecological research. Think of quick scans of flora and fauna, nitrogen calculations and analyses, and detailed species-specific research into, for example, protected species;
  • Drafting ecological work protocols based on the results of ecological research;
  • Contributing substantively to the ecological aspects of tenders by thinking along and writing, among other things, the plan of approach;
  • Shaping the ecological course within Unihorn;
  • Guiding and coaching junior ecologists.

Functie-eisen

In this role, ecological expertise is important, but your success is also determined by your ability to build, connect, and steer. You are analytically strong and know how to translate ecological data into clear advice. Because you are working on a discipline under construction, you are a self-starter who shows initiative, identifies opportunities, and dares to make decisions independently. You maintain an overview, set priorities, and bring structure to a dynamic environment. Additionally, you know how to convey your advice convincingly, both in writing and in conversations with clients and colleagues. You know how to not only strengthen ecology substantively but also to position it strategically within Unihorn’s integrated approach.

In their own words

About the company & team

We are Unihorn (part of Strukton), a nationally operating research, design, and consultancy firm that offers solutions for issues in Infrastructure and Public Space. Based on the idea that what is conceived must also be executable and maintainable, we are the link between research, advice, design, and management. We operate integrally from our locations in Medemblik, Capelle aan den IJssel, and Oldenzaal.

As a Senior Ecologist, you will be part of the Pavement & Environment team: a close-knit group of about 30 colleagues with diverse expertise in the field of pavements and the environment. The team consists of, among others, team leaders, project leaders, advisors, field workers, inspectors, and laboratory specialists. Together, we conduct research and provide substantiated advice prior to infra projects and maintenance work. Thanks to this combination of practical execution and specialist knowledge, we are an essential link within infrastructural projects.

In the development of the ecological discipline, you will work closely with a project leader with ecological knowledge and a junior soil advisor. You will regularly brainstorm with them about substantive issues, work approaches, and integrated project execution. In this way, you contribute to the further development of ecology as a full-fledged component within our integrated services.
