The role

Under the brand name Feadship, De Vries Scheepsbouw Makkum has been building the most exclusive superyachts in the world for decades. In addition to new construction, Feadship Refit & Services also plays an increasingly large role within our organization. From Makkum, we work on the maintenance, modernization, and renovation of the global Feadship fleet. From scheduled maintenance and technical upgrades to extensive refits: every project is custom-made and requires craftsmanship, technical expertise, and close cooperation with the owner. Our activities take place at our shipyards in the Netherlands or, depending on the project, at locations all over the world.

Due to the growth of Feadship Refit & Services, we are expanding the Proposal Engineering team in Makkum. Together with three colleagues, you will support the Sales Manager during the commercial and technical pre-phase of challenging refit projects. From the very first customer inquiry, you will translate the customer's wishes into a technically feasible and commercially substantive proposal.

What you'll do

The sales process for refit projects runs from the initial inquiry to the signing of the contract. As a Proposal Engineer, you are the driver of your project and are responsible for the technical elaboration of inquiries. You advise the Sales Manager and the customer on possibilities, risks, and feasibility. You map out the customer's wishes, determine the scope of the project together with the involved disciplines, and assess whether these are technically, operationally, and financially feasible. In doing so, you work closely with Engineering, Purchasing, Production, and other internal departments. Although you have the lead over your own project, you work within a close-knit team of Proposal Engineers in which knowledge is shared and colleagues support each other to collectively achieve the best result.

Your duties include:

  • Carrying out surveys on board and inventorying the wishes of the customer and crew;
  • Determining the project scope and translating customer wishes into a technical proposal;
  • Preparing quotes, cost estimates, and budgets;
  • Assessing technical feasibility in collaboration with internal disciplines;
  • Maintaining contact with suppliers and subcontractors and requesting and assessing quotes;
  • Researching new suppliers that meet Feadship's quality standards;
  • Supporting the project team during the Refit by assessing and processing change orders;
  • Aligning technical choices with the Sales Manager, internal disciplines, and external parties;
  • Handing over a complete project file to the Refit Project team after the order has been placed.

The inquiries you work on are extensive and often have a lead time of several months. This requires technical insight, overview, and the ability to bring different interests together in one proposal.

You are technically and commercially minded and know how to translate customer inquiries into a feasible proposal. You switch easily between customers, suppliers, and colleagues and are able to explain technical considerations clearly. In doing so, you do not lose sight of the commercial objective.
